Congratulations to G04 Copa who advanced all the way to the 2018 Far West Regional Final in Honolulu, Hawaii! Led by coach Pat Staunton, G04 Copa went undefeated in group play before advancing to the final with a 1-0 win against GS Surf in the quarterfinal, and an intense penalty kick shootout victory against Beach FC (Cal-South) in the semifinal. “I am incredibly proud of the girls for the hard work and desire that they showed throughout that week,” said coach Staunton. “To play with the intensity and commitment for 6 games in 7 days was a great achievement.” Having already battled eventual champions Arsenal FC (Cal-South) to a 0-0 tie in the group stage, the rematch in the final proved to be another hotly contested game. Copa was unlucky not to take the lead after hitting the crossbar with 10 minutes left in the game. Eventually, a late penalty coverted by Arsenal with 5 minutes to spare decided the match. “It was great to be on the sideline associated with that group,” Staunton added. “They should be extremely proud of themselves for what they achieved. Thank you for all your commitment, hard work, and desire for the game!” G04 Copa is Seattle United’s first girls team to advance to the Far West Regional Final, and joins B98 Copa and B02 Copa as the only Seattle United teams to have advanced to the championship game of the competition.
