SEATTLE UNITED COVID-19 POLICIES & PROCEDURES

Updated January 10, 2022

The Seattle United Athletic Trainer (ATC) is the point of contact for the club. ATC duties include the following:

  • Educate and share policies and protocols to club staff and families
  • Stay up to date on CDC, state, and local public health guidelines
  • Track COVID-19 cases (possible exposures and positive cases) within the club
  • Collaborate and communicate with the Medical Advisory Committee
  • Enforce the club COVID-19 reporting protocol
  • Update COVID-19 policies & procedures as necessary

Vaccinations and Boosters

Symptoms

  • No player or coach with symptoms of possible COVID-19 should attend a practice or a game.

High-Risk Close Contacts

  • A high-risk close contact is defined as an exposure to someone who is less than 6 feet away for greater than 15 minutes cumulative in a 24-hour period.
  • A person is considered infectious starting 48 hours prior to the onset of symptoms or a positive test (whichever came first).
  • Household members that are positive are considered high-risk close contacts.
  • Indoor activities are considered higher risk than outdoor activities.
  • Playing soccer outdoors is considered a low-risk activity.

Quarantine after a High-Risk Exposure

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s1227-isolation-quarantine-guidance.html

  • Fully vaccinated and boosted individuals who are a high-risk close contact to an infected individual should monitor for symptoms and wear a medical grade (not cloth) mask for 10 days when around others. They should consider a test on day 5 if possible. They may continue to attend practice and games but must wear a mask for 10 days when around others.
  • Unvaccinated individuals who are a high-risk close contact should quarantine (stay home) for 5 days and monitor for symptoms. They should consider a test on day 5 if possible.  They may not attend practice or games while in quarantine.  They may return to practice and games on day 6 but must wear a mask through day 10.
  • If a player has been placed in quarantine by their school, Seattle United defers to the school policy for the duration and specific restrictions.

Exposure at Practice or Game

  • Evidence has demonstrated that playing soccer outdoors is a low-risk activity. If the club becomes aware that a player on a team (or opposing team) has tested positive within 48 hours of a practice or game, the families will be notified of a possible low-risk exposure.  Families may choose to get tested but this is not required.  The team will not be shut down and practices and games will not be canceled unless there are special circumstances.
  • Low-risk exposure on the field of play does not exclude the possibility of high-risk exposures from other activities between teammates (i.e., carpools, meals, extended before or after practice interaction, indoor social interaction).

Isolation after a Positive Test for COVID-19

This applies to vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals:

  • Day 0 = first day of symptoms or positive test date
  • Isolate for 5 days
  • Day 6 if symptoms (i.e., cough, fever, chills, fatigue, sore throat, congestion) are resolved or improving, the player may return to practice or a game in a medical grade (not cloth) mask worn at all times when around others until day 10.
  • A negative test on day 6-10 allows a player to travel, practice or play in a game without a mask.
  • A doctor’s note is not needed to return to practice. However, all players should feel well when returning to training and exercise.  Players with more severe symptoms or an illness of longer duration will usually require a gradual return to exercise and should consider consulting their physician.  Any player with cardiovascular symptoms during exercise (i.e., chest pain, excessive breathlessness) should seek medical evaluation.

Travel Policy

  • Seattle United travel policies will be determined for each individual away tournament. Teams will either travel team-style with chaperones, or family-style where each player has a parent or other designated adult on the trip.  Factors that influence the decision for team- versus family-style travel include: current status of the pandemic, proximity of tournament, and the vaccination/booster status of the age group.
  • The health and safety of the players, coaches, and families are always the priority.

COVID-19 Reporting

  • Coaches should submit a report within 24 hours of finding out a player has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Parents may be contacted via email for more information.
